Traffic Fatalities Down 9% in 2008 |
|
Traffic fatalities in Oklahoma are down for the fourth straight year with reports currently showing 694 fatalities for 2008. This is down from 754 in 2007 and 765 in 2006.
There are many variables when it comes to traffic crashes, making it difficult to make a cause-and-effect determination as to exactly what has caused this fatality reduction in Oklahoma. However, the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, together with its state and local partners, has been working diligently to educate the public. More people are wearing seat belts than ever before with Oklahoma boasting an 84.3% seat belt compliance rate, up 1.2 percentage points from 2007.
This is a success for our local partners, state partners, and the state of Oklahoma. A reduction of this magnitude wouldn't be possible without the officers on the road making contacts and others who are helping educate the public to wear their seat belt and drive safely.
